Backpacks 4 Kids
- Did you know that the Franklin Pierce School District has the highest rate of free and reduced lunch in Pierce County with around 70% of students qualifying?
- Backpacks 4 Kids (B4K) is a weekend food program that supplements meals for students who may experience food insecurity at home. Each week, easy to prepare food items are packed by volunteers into individual bags, delivered to 15 different schools and sent home with over 350 students on Fridays.
- B4K also supports nine community pantries stocking food and hygiene items. Pantries are located at the Franklin Pierce Family Resource Center, the Summit Library and at seven schools within the Franklin Pierce School District. Together, these pantries and food bags serve over 500 kids in Franklin Pierce each week.
- B4K is only sustainable with your help! This program is made possible by the faithfulness of donors and volunteers sharing their time and financial support.
OSLC is grateful for the support of our program partners:
- Brennan Heating and Air Conditioning
- Columbia Bank
- Franklin Pierce Education Association
- Franz Bakery
- Klein Family
- Starbucks
- Thrivent Financial
Here are some ways you can help
Volunteer
Wednesday night packing in the B4K program is a BLAST, but it takes a village. It takes 15-20 volunteers each week to pack food bags. Packing is very popular with community groups, so sign ups for all packing shifts are online. We also offer individual shifts during the daytime. Contact Kristin for the link to view the online sign ups.
