MAY 28

The past 2 weeks have been full of finalization and preparation. Carpet was installed, pews were installed, AVL system was installed, Security Cameras were installed... many people helped move the church back from Ford to the OSLC campus. Furniture was moved, floors were vacuumed and mopped, trim was dusted, windows washed, and so much more.

Our first Sunday back was a joyous occasion!

There are still a few minor things that need to be finished, but we are very close to being done... motorized window blinds will be installed this week, the overflow audio will be installed, WiFi will be upgraded, some doors will be installed, house lights will be completed...

Thank you again, to all who helped serve in one way or another these past 6 months! We could not have done it without you!

Thank you to all who gave so generously to the Beauty For Ashes Fund! You can still give so we might reach our goal.

MAY 12

It has been a busy first couple weeks of May as our subcontractors are finalizing up work. Flooring is being prepped in the worship center. Audio/Video/Lighting continues to get installed. Electrical trim. Security Camera system. Construction (doors & trim)... final roofing work, final drywall patching, final staining and painting, acoustic panels. So many details...

The OSLC Staff is prepping for our move back... there will be a lot to bring back from Ford, and we'll have to prep our facility for full use on May 28!

A lot is going on this week. The Audio/Video/Lighting system is getting installed. House Lights are getting installed. New doors are getting installed...

The flooring in the lobby is being installed. It will take several days to complete. It is a 'luxury vinyl tile' - it has the appearance of stone tile, but it is vinyl... it is durable, easy to clean and looks very attractive.

The lobby floor is being prepped for the flooring that will be installed. The GluLams are just about completed. Wiring for the audio/video/lighting is being pulled.

Our large wooden cross has been cleaned as much as possible, sanded, and re-stained. Due to the charring and smoke damage toward the top, we did not want to leave the cross untouched. That said, there is still some slight darkness toward the top of the cross caused by the heat of the fire... this will certainly act as a reminder of the fire, but also the strength of the power of Christ on the cross... he was victorious!

The large wood beams, known as GluLams (Glued Laminated Timber), are being prepped for installation on the ceiling trusses. Except for a few small things, painting is completed in the worship center. Electrical trim will begin soon.

Painting is underway in the worship center, and should be completed by the end of the week. New lighting is getting installed in the lobby area. The ceiling tiles will be installed shortly.

Texturing of the wall board has begun. Painting will continue once that is complete and dry.

The gypsum wall board mudding is still underway. Texturing will take place next, and should be completed by the middle/end of next week (March 29). Painting in the worship center will take place once the texture is dry. This should take us through the end of March.

In the meantime, work has begun in the lobby. Electrical rough-in for lights above the drop ceiling is underway. Painting of the lobby will take place this week. Once painting is done, the grid for the drop ceiling will be installed.

Work on the roof has begun. As is the case whenever you tear off shingles, you run the risk of finding some things in need of repair. There was some water damage found due to an ineffective detail design during original installation. This will be repaired, and will resolve many of the leaking issues we have encountered over the last 20+ years.

Gypsum Wall Board (aka Drywall or Sheet Rock) is now being installed. Building permits were approved last week, allowing us to cover the walls. This process will take several days, as there will be a lot of time needed for taping & mudding...

We began the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday service. View some photos here. We had 2 services in our Fellowship Hall at OSLC, (5 & 7pm) in order to accommodate over 300 people who normally attend that annual special service. We will continue to have our midweek services at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall throughout Lent. Due to our lack of space, we will not be hosting Lenten Dinners this year.

All of our Holy Week services (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday) and Easter will take place at Ford Middle School (except the Saturday PM service - which will be in the Fellowship Hall).

We have a projected completion time frame - May!

Electricians continue their work in the worship center and the lobby. The HVAC subcontractor removed the smoke damaged unit. Lincoln Construction repaired damaged walls & studs. Drywall is being installed/wrapped around the steel trusses that span from the back to the front of the sanctuary. Insulation is beginning to go in. New square windows for the chancel area have been delivered and will be installed soon. We have a good bid from a roofer who will replace the damaged roof and fix and replace the roofing in other areas around the worship center and over the lobby.

We have met with several other folks as well - interior designer, window blinds, acoustic treatment, audio/video/lighting, wood restoration for the cross and other chancel furniture.

The rest of the wall insulation and the drywall will go in after electrical and fire alarm inspections are complete.

NOTE: The worship center is now a construction zone, and hard hats are required. Please do not enter the construction zone. Thank you!

Lincoln Construction is now onsite, and has begun demolition of some of the areas that need repair and replacement.

Electricians continue to wire the space for lighting, electricity and data.

Electricians have begun work in the worship center and lobby. They are beginning the electrical rough-in.

We have been communicating with the insurance company, including providing spreadsheets of our various losses. Our GC has submitted his scope of work to the insurance company. This includes all the work necessary to restore the room - from concrete, to structure, to electrical, and the various finishes.

We are working with CCI Solutions, based in Olympia, to restore our Audio/Video/Lighting systems... much of what will be installed will include new technology, like LED lights (which will provide a great energy savings to the church).

We are working with Barb Dalton of Concepts Design (Commercial/Residential) for the interior finishes, including carpet, flooring, paint, fabrics. Barb has developed a wonderful color palette that has been approved by our staff.

We do have a General Contractor (GC); Lincoln Construction. Our GC is now in the process of coordinating sub-contractors, arranging inspections of our building systems (HVAC, Electrical, Roof, etc) and beginning the process of coordinating the various aspects of rebuilding. There is not a firm timeline as of yet.

Join us on Sunday, January 8 between 10:30am and 1:00pm in the OSLC Worship Center.

Before construction begins you will have the opportunity to write your favorite scripture or prayer inside the Worship Center on the studs and headers. Make this a family event!

December 11 - Currently, the worship center and lobby of our church are being demo'd. All of the drywall, carpet and destroyed elements are being dumped. The pews will be salvaged and reupholstered. The space will essentially be completely gutted and cleaned/prepped so it can be rebuilt on framing as if it were brand new. This demolition will take a couple weeks.

December 11 - Our 'temporary' home for Worship and Sunday School is Ford Middle School.

Open House to View Damage

There are many of us who have fond memories of the worship space at Our Savior Lutheran, but have yet to see the damage caused by the fire. If you have not seen the damage of the fire and wish to do so, we will be having 2 'open house' opportunities.

Saturday, December 3, 1-4pm

Sunday, December 4, 1-4pm

You will not be able to enter the space, as there is still clean-up going on. But you can come and look... take time to pray and grieve... there will be elders and members there to support you while you view the space.

The building is still standing, and we will rebuild and renovate... God is good!

Worship on Sunday, December 4 (The Advent Choral Celebration) will take place in the beautiful Lagerquist Concert Hall at PLU.

OS Family,

Early this morning, our church was broken into and 3 fires were set in our sanctuary and lobby. The damages in these areas are significant and they will not be usable for the immediate future. The church campus is closed until next week. Thankfully, no one was injured or hurt.

We are planning to hold services this Sunday at Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School (12108 Pacific Ave S. – Tacoma, WA 98447) at our normal times (9AM & 10:45AM). We will also have kids and youth programming as well at 9AM.

We will share more information with you as it becomes available. At this time, we appreciate your prayers as we seek God’s direction in this. We will let you know how we need help moving forward. We praise God that the Church is not simply a building, but a people.

Peace and joy,

Matt Cario
Director of Discipleship
